Two new species of Hystrignathidae (Nematoda: Thelastomatoidea) associated to Heliscus tropicus and Rhodocanthopus cognatus (Coleoptera: Passalidae) from Tamaulipas, Mexico

Abstract

The description of Lepidonema zuritai n. sp. and Phalacronema vegae n. sp. (Nematoda, Hystrignathidae, from the intestine of Heliscus tropicus Percheron, 1835 and Passalus cognatus Truqui, 1857 (Passalidae), collected in Tamaulipas, northeastern Mexico, is presented. The new species are described based on the morphological characteristics of the internal and external anatomy typically used for the taxonomic characterization of histrignatids, such as number of ovaries, shape of the esophagus and its parts, presence, shape and disposition of cuticular ornamentations (spines, wings, striations), among others. Additionally, phylogenetic relationships of the described species are presented, based on molecular characters obtained from partial sequences of the minor and major subunits of the ribosome, informative markers typically used in nematode phylogenetics. Both species were recovered within the clade that groups most of Hystrignathidae genera analyzed, and although relationships within the clade are not entirely clear, results obtained suggest a close relationship between Lepidonema zuritai n. sp. and Xyo pseudohystrix, while relationships of Phalacronema vegae n. sp. within the clade are still unclear.
