To study the environmental variations at the spatio-temporal level in tropical coastal lagoons and their impact on resident fauna, the isotopic composition (δ18O and δ13C) of 70 otoliths (1 per pair) of the fish Bairdiella chrysoura were analyzed. This fish species is considered as resident of the Laguna de Términos Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFFLT). Monthly samplings were carried out (September 2016 to August 2017) at 17 APFFLT stations, where the
specimens were obtained and the “sagitta” otolith was analyzed using GasBench coupled to an isotopic ratios mass spectrometer. Significant differences were found in δ18O at the temporal level, suggesting that the otoliths respond to environmental changes, associated with fluctuations in temperature and salinity related with the zone (low overlap between seasons in δ13C). Paleo-temperature equations showed a better fit with salinity changes, demonstrating the influence of this variable in tropical coastal lagoons. In conclusion, the δ18O and δ13C showed that B. chrysoura registers environmental changes present in the APFFLT, however, it is suggested to develop paleo-climatic equations for tropical coastal lagoons to project regional climate scenarios.
