Fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) of southern Mexico and description of 39 new species

Fireflies from Chiapas, Guerrero, and Oaxaca are documented, an area which is designated as the southern region. Information on species in the region and brief descriptions of those not previously treated are provided. Thirty-nine new species belonging to the genus Photinus Laporte are described. Each new species is illustrated in dorsal and ventral views, as well as the male genitalia. New state records for Aspisoma aelianum (Gorham), Cratomorphus picipennis Gorham, Lucidota discolor Gorham, Photinus ahuizotli Zaragoza-Caballero and Domínguez-León, P. anagabrielae Zaragoza-Caballero and Gutiérrez-Carranza, P. hoffmanni Zaragoza-Caballero and Gutiérrez-Carranza, P. juanrulfoi Zaragoza-Caballero and Domínguez-León, P. kaedii Zaragoza-Caballero and González-Ramírez, P. paracongruus Zaragoza-Caballero, P. silveirai Zaragoza-Caballero and González-Ramírez, P. tenuilineatus Zaragoza-Caballero, P. toledoi Zaragoza-Caballero, P. perezi Zaragoza-Caballero, Photuris fulvipes (Blanchard in Brullé), and Pyropyga extensa Green are provided. After examining the specimen of Photinus consimilis Green deposited in the National Insect Collection of the Institute of Biology, UNAM, it was concluded that it corresponds to a female of P. tenuilineatus Zaragoza-Caballero. With the description of the new species from this region, the state of Chiapas has a record of 65 species, Guerrero 41, and Oaxaca 79, the diversity of fireflies in Mexico rises to 346.
