Mexico’s floristic diversity is largely determined by its location between the Nearctic and Neotropical regions, together with its physiographic complexity and environmental heterogeneity, particularly in the Sierra de Juárez, Oaxaca, where temperate forests transition into subtropical communities. This study aimed to analyze patterns of diversity and community structure of the woody component along a regional elevational gradient. Fifty-three circular plots (1,000 m² each) were established between 1,500 and 3,000 m asl. Alpha diversity was assessed using Hill numbers, whereas community structure was evaluated through the Importance Value Index, Forest Value Index, and vertical vegetation profiles. Linear and polynomial models were used to evaluate the relationship between species richness and elevation. A total of 97 woody species belonging to 26 families were recorded. Species richness showed a significant quadratic relationship with elevation (adjusted R² = 0.29; AIC = 281). The north-facing slope exhibited a unimodal pattern, whereas the south-facing slope displayed a more open vegetation structure with a transition toward xerophytic elements. These patterns indicate that elevation, slope aspect, and environmental heterogeneity jointly shape community organization, with intermediate elevations representing areas of high floristic and structural heterogeneity.
