Abstract

Natural regeneration is fundamental to forest ecosystem dynamics, and understanding this process is esencial for designing conservation, restoration, and silvicultural practices. At three sites within the Nevado de Colima Cloud Forest State Park, Mexico, we evaluated the composition, diversity, and structure of natural regeneration of woody plants ≥ 10 cm in height and ≤ 2.5 cm in diameter at breast height, as well as the environmental factors influencing their distribution and abundance. At each location, 5 1,000 m² plots were established, with 10 circular 5 m² subplots nested within each plot. Species frequency, density, cover, and importance values were  calculated. Cluster analysis, true diversity analysis based on Hill numbers, and redundancy analysis were also performed. Fifty-five species were recorded: 44 tree species and 11 liana species. Species diversity varied among sites, and statistically distinct floristic groups were identified. The species with the highest importance value were Inga eriocarpa, Styrax ramirezii, Carpinus caroliniana, and Zinowiewia concinna. Leaf-litter cover, microrelief, elevation, slope, and topsoil depth were the most influential environmental variables. These findings provide valuable information for developing management and conservation strategies for cloud forests in the study area.
