Abstract

THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VEGETATION AND THE POLLEN PRODUCES THE STUDY OF PLANT COMMUNITIES FROM A PALYNOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW. THEREFORE, IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE DISTRIBUTION OF VEGETATION BY MEANS OF THE DISPERSAL AND DEPOSITION OF POLLEN GRAINS. CHARACTERIZATION OF THE POLLEN OF VEGETATION COMMUNITIES ALLOWS US TO INVESTIGATE THE VEGETATION HISTORY FROM AN ACTUALISTIC POINT OF VIEW. THE AIM OF THIS WORK IS TO CHARACTERIZE THE MODERN POLLEN DISPERSALDEPOSITION IN RELATION TO THE VEGETATION DISTRIBUTION BY USING MULTIVARIATE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS (CLUSTER AND CORRESPONDENCE ANALYSES) AS AN ESSENTIAL STEP FOR FUTURE STUDIES ON THE HOLOCENE ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY OF ISLA GRANDE DE TIERRA DEL FUEGO. THE STUDY AREA IS LOCATED IN THE ARGENTINE SECTOR OF A LARGE ISLAND --ISLA GRANDE DE TIERRA DEL FUEGO-- AT 52°40´S-55°07´S; 65°05”W-68°40”W. THE RESULTS OF NUMERICAL METHODS AND THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS HAVE ALLOWED THE DIFFERENTIATION OF A CONTINUUM OF COMMUNITIES THAT BELONG TO DIFFERENT PHYSIOGNOMIC UNITS: FORESTS AND GRASS STEPPE.
